Jimi Hendrix - Are You Experienced (1967), Music

Are You Experienced is the debut album by Jimi Hendrix Experience. Released in 1967, it was the first LP on the new Track Records label. The album highlighted Jimi Hendrix's R&B based, psychedelic, feedback-laden electric guitar playing, with an imaginative song writing style and launched him as a major new International star and later fame in the USA and Canada.

The album is also known as Are You Experienced?, which Barclay Records of France used for their original 1967 release and subsequent re-releases. Although all other covers of the album list the title without the question mark. Also, some tracklists of the album display the title track with a question mark.

After being taken under Chas Chandler's wing and arriving in England in September 1966 , they formed The Jimi Hendrix Experience with Mitch Mitchell on drums and Noel Redding on bass. The group signed with Track Records, newly formed by The Who's managers Kit Lambert and Chris Stamp. However the group's debut single appeared on Polydor Records, their distributor, because Track was not fully operational. The group released three classic Top 10 hit UK singles produced by Chas Chandler : "Hey Joe"/"Stone Free" (December 1966), "Purple Haze"/"51st Anniversary" (March 1967, the 1st release by the new Track Records label, on a special white label) and "The Wind Cries Mary"/"Highway Chile" (May 1967). The overdubs for Purple Haze were Jimi's first session at the recently opened Olympic studios with the engineer Eddie Kramer, although they continued to record tracks with engineer Dave Siddle at De Lane Lea studios, for a while. During the making of these singles, The Jimi Hendrix Experience also cut the tracks that became their debut album, which Chas Chandler also produced with the Olympic Studios Engineer Eddie Kramer (some tracks were recorded with engineers Dave Siddle at De Lane Lea & Mike Ross at CBS studios). Released in England that May without the three singles - as was the custom in the UK at that time - Are You Experienced and The Jimi Hendrix Experience quickly became a sensation all across (non communist bloc) Europe, with the album reaching #2 in the UK, behind The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.

Although it is their sixth studio album,Dark Passion Play marks the beginning of a new era for Finnish symphonic metal masters Nightwish. With new vocalist Annette Olzon onboard, Nightwish returns with their most accessible material to date. Firmly rooted in their trademark symphonic sounds featuring elaborate keyboard and guitar parts blended seamlessly with intricate string and choir sections, Olzon’s vocals have more pop sensibility as they are far less operatic than those of her predecessor. This is perfectly exemplified in the vocal melodies in Amaranth, Eva and the scorching duet with bassist Marco Hietala titled Bye Bye Beautiful. Nightwish mastermind Tuomas Holopainen (keyboards) not only wrote all the lyrics and all but two songs on the album, but also helmed the project as one of the producers along with T.C. The very best of Sting & The Police (2002 Expanded)

"The Very Best of Sting and the Police" is "politically correct" in that it brings Police hits and Sting solo-hits. It has a lot of things going for it: first and foremost, much of the music is outstanding. Best of all is the inclusion of "So Lonely", a major hit which somehow was omitted from The Police's "Every Breath You Take: The Classics". This can directly be attributed to using the full extent of a single CD capacity. The sound quality is surprisingly good as well. What is very unfortunate is that all songs are mixed and matched without any apparent rhyme or reason. Thus we go from the Police's "Can't Stand Losing You" directly into Sting's "An Englishman in New York. Say what? Or we go from Sting's "Seven Days" into the Police's "Walking on the Moon"! Why couldn't they simply present the songs in chronological order? That said, there IS a lot of great music on this CD. It's simply up to you to play it in an order that makes more sense and pleases the ear more.

Mr. Big - Actual Size (2001)

When guitarist Paul Gilbert exited Mr. Big in 1997, fans wondered if the technically high-skilled pop-metal band was over. But instead of calling it a day, Mr. Big enlisted brief Poison member Richie Kotzen to take the place of Gilbert, and issued a pair of albums ? 2000's Get Over It and what turned out to be their final release, 2001's Actual Size. Despite numerous musical styles coming and going since their self-titled debut arrived in 1989, Mr. Big admirably stood their ground stylistically, as Actual Size manages to retain their early arena rock sound while also fitting in with modern-day mainstream rock. This approach is best sampled on such tracks as "Shine" (which was supposedly a hit in the land where Mr. Big continue to reign supreme ? Japan) and the album opener, "Lost in America." And it just wouldn't be a Mr. Big album without a power ballad, and here it comes in the form of "Nothing Like It in the World" ? a track that seems custom-made for either Meat Loaf or Michael Bolton. As evidenced by Actual Size, Mr. Big stuck to their guns till the very end.

No Doubt - The Singles 1992-2003

Though they've suffered death, departure and fraught internal and external relationships, No Doubt have kept faith with fun throughout, as The Singles very clearly proves. As their troubles have made them far from prolific, it's culled almost entirely from three albums--Return of Saturn, Rock Steady and their mega-hit Tragic Kingdom--with just the quirky, warped ska of "Trapped in a Box" to represent their eponymously titled major label debut.

As said, it's excellent fun, from the opening power anthem "Just a Girl", through the ultra-modern, Madonna-like "Hey Baby" and the urgent, melodious power pop of "Excuse Me Mr" to the Chicago-style break-up ballad "Don't Speak". It's easy to see how this colourful band of Anaheim skanksters came to be seen as an energising antidote to the crushing male miserabilism of grunge. There are a few extras; a reverent cover of Talk Talk's "It's My Life", a dance-metal "Hey Baby" remix and a live repeat of the cute, Leonard Cohen-quoting "Underneath It All", featuring Gwen Stefani's vocal and a simple acoustic guitar. But, naturally, it's the hits that count and they're all here, every bouncing, beaming one of them. It's a fine testament to one of America's most enduring pop acts.

Nevermind was a surprise success by late 1991, largely due to the success of its lead single "Smells Like Teen Spirit". By January 1992 it had replaced Michael Jackson's album Dangerous at number one on the Billboard charts. This album was a true turning point for the band, for after Jon Oliva watched The Phantom of the Opera in Toronto, he decided to change the sound of the band, from a heavy metal to a more progressive sound, which is reflected in songs such as “When the Crowds are Gone” and “Gutter Ballet”. The final three songs (”Mentally Yours”, “Summer’s Rain”, “Thorazine Shuffle”) are a conceptual suite dealing with a single character as revealed by the band in interviews.

The original title for the record was Temptation Revelation, but this was changed to Hounds of Zaroff which was a Steve Wacholz suggestion. As late as May 1989, the band was having doubts surrounding the title. At the time, the eventual title track of the album had not been written. The title, “Gutter Ballet” was in fact the title of a play Paul O’Neill had written ten years earlier that would later make-up the majority of the band’s next work, “Streets”. In fact, “Gutter Ballet” was written with just Jon, Criss and Paul in the studio. Jon’s drumming skill was competent enough to perform on the track and Jon also provided the bass guitar duties for the track.
